I was lying on the couch when I heard a loud pop and all of the smoke alarms went off. I went in search of the fire, but the alarms reset before I found anything. One smoke detector started that annoying “change my battery, please” beep.
This is what I found when I opened it up. The battery had exploded. I have no idea how long it has been since the battery was changed since I try to do it regularly. No matter. Change your batteries, Oppo.

Our smoke alarm is hard wired. But the recommendation is to change the batteries when you change your clocks.

Ours are hard-wired too. The battery is backup in case the power goes out. I normally change all of them on New Year day. I'm not sure if this one was missed repeatedly or if I just got cheap batteries this year.

While you’re up there, check the date of manufacture, too. If it’s more than 10 years old, you’re really supposed to replace the whole unit (that includes hardwired ones as well). I only just found that out, and thought, “Well, I’ve got time, we only just bought the place in 2001 and put the detectors in, so... oh. Guess I’m heading to the hardware store.”

And if the thing is in an inconvenient place, get the 9v Lithium Ion battery to put in it which is supposed to do the 10 year thing. When it wears out, just replace the unit.
